Mixing screen printing ink colors can reduce inventory, create custom shades, and help match customer artwork more closely. However, small mistakes in measurement, product selection, testing, or recordkeeping can turn a useful formula into an unrepeatable color.
The most important rule is to treat color mixing as a controlled production process. Use compatible inks, measure by weight, evaluate cured samples, and record every adjustment. A color that looks correct in the bucket may print very differently on the garment.
Mistake 1: Mixing By Eye Instead Of By Weight
Estimating ink amounts with a spatula or measuring cup may work for an informal one-time color, but it does not create a dependable formula.
Screen printing ink should be measured by weight using an accurate digital scale. Weight is more consistent than volume because thick ink does not level evenly inside cups or spoons.
A repeatable process is:
- Place a clean mixing container on the scale.
- Tare the scale to zero.
- Add each color according to the formula.
- Record the exact weight of every component.
- Mix thoroughly before making adjustments.
Do not rely on “one scoop of red” or “a small amount of black.” Another employee will not be able to reproduce those measurements later.
Mistake 2: Confusing Ink-To-Ink And Pigment-To-Base Systems
Ink mixing systems generally use one of two methods.
An ink-to-ink system combines finished, printable colors. Each component is already a complete ink, so the original colors and the mixed result can all be printed.

Using pigment concentrate as though it were finished ink can produce poor curing, weak adhesion, incorrect viscosity, and unreliable durability.
Mistake 3: Mixing Incompatible Ink Systems
Two products may both be described as plastisol without being intended for unrestricted mixing. Different ink series may use different resins, plasticizers, curing temperatures, pigments, and performance additives.
Combining incompatible products can change:
- Cure performance
- Bleed resistance
- Stretch
- Opacity
- Viscosity
- Flash behavior
- Storage stability
Whenever possible, mix colors from the same series or use a designated mixing system. Do not combine plastisol, water-based ink, silicone ink, pigment concentrates, and unrelated additives unless the manufacturers specifically approve the mixture.
Mistake 4: Failing To Mix Each Original Ink First
Ink can settle while stored. If one component is taken from the top of an unmixed container, its pigment concentration may differ from material near the bottom.
Bring every component to room temperature and mix it thoroughly before weighing the formula. Scrape the bottom and sides until the color and consistency are uniform.

Mistake 5: Ignoring Color Undertones
Not every red, blue, or yellow behaves the same way. A blue may lean green or violet. A red may lean orange or blue. Those undertones affect every color made from them.
For example, combining a green-shade blue with a yellow may produce a clean green. Mixing a violet-shade blue with the same yellow may create a duller result because the hidden red component pushes the mixture toward brown or gray.
Use the colors specified by the formula rather than substituting a visually similar ink. A substitution that looks minor in the original container can create a major difference in the final mixture.
Mistake 6: Adding Black Too Quickly
Black is powerful and can overwhelm a mixture with a very small addition. When darkening a color, add black in tiny measured increments.
In some cases, a deeper version of the original hue produces a cleaner result than black. Dark blue may be better for adjusting a light blue, while a deep red may preserve the character of a lighter red.
Mix completely after each addition before deciding that more is needed. Correcting an overly dark mixture often requires a large amount of the original colors.
Mistake 7: Using White Without Considering Opacity
White does more than make a color lighter. It can also increase opacity, soften saturation, and change the way a color appears over a dark garment or underbase.
Adding large amounts of white may turn a bright color into a pastel rather than simply making it more opaque. A mixing white may also behave differently from a high-opacity printing white.
Use the white specified by the mixing system. Do not automatically replace it with whichever white happens to be closest to the press.
Mistake 8: Evaluating The Color In The Bucket
Wet ink on a spatula is not the final printed color. Screen mesh, stencil thickness, underbase, garment color, and curing can all change its appearance.
Always print and fully cure a sample before approving the mixture. Evaluate it using the same:
- Garment or representative fabric
- Underbase
- Mesh count
- Number of print strokes
- Flash procedure
- Cure settings
A thin deposit over white may look brighter than the same ink printed directly on a dark garment. A thick deposit may appear more opaque and saturated than a fine-mesh test.
Mistake 9: Ignoring The Underbase
The underbase is part of the final color system. A bright, smooth white underbase may produce a different shade than a gray, uneven, or under-cured base.
When matching a color for dark garments, approve the formula over the production underbase. Keep the mesh, deposit, flash, and print sequence consistent during both testing and production.
Changing the underbase after approving the color may make the mixture appear incorrect even though its formula has not changed.
Mistake 10: Making Large Corrections
When a color is slightly wrong, resist the temptation to make a large adjustment. Add small measured quantities, mix completely, and print another sample.
A controlled correction process is:
- Identify whether the color is too light, dark, warm, cool, bright, or dull.
- Select one component likely to correct that specific problem.
- Add a small measured amount.
- Record the new total formula.
- Print and cure another test.
Changing several components at once makes it difficult to determine which adjustment improved or damaged the color.
Mistake 11: Adding Reducer To Fix The Color
Reducer changes viscosity and ink deposit; it is not a color-correction tool. A reduced ink may appear lighter because less pigment is deposited, but the mixture itself has not been accurately corrected.
Excess reducer can also lower opacity, increase spreading, enlarge halftone dots, and weaken bleed resistance.
First match the color using the proper ink components. Adjust viscosity only after the mixture has reached room temperature, been thoroughly mixed, and tested through the production screen.
Mistake 12: Using Dirty Tools And Containers
A trace of black or navy can noticeably change a pale yellow, pink, or pastel. Cleaner, water, lint, and dried ink can also affect printability and curing.
Use clean, dry:
- Mixing containers
- Spatulas
- Drill mixers
- Scale surfaces
- Sample screens
Do not return custom-mixed ink to one of its original color containers. Keep it in a separate labeled container so the source ink remains uncontaminated.
Mistake 13: Scaling The Formula Incorrectly
Once a small test formula is approved, every component must be multiplied by the same factor. Do not round one component heavily while leaving the others exact.
For example, if an approved formula is doubled, every ingredient must be doubled. Adding “a little extra white” during the larger batch changes the ratio and may produce a different color.
Calculate the production quantity before mixing and leave enough ink for setup, test prints, and normal waste. Recreating an exact match halfway through the run can be difficult.
Mistake 14: Failing To Record Adjustments
A published formula is only the starting point when changes are made. Every correction must become part of the final record.
Document:
- Ink system and component names
- Weight of every component
- Total mixed weight
- Customer and job number
- Garment color and fabric
- Underbase and mesh information
- Date mixed
- Final cured sample approval
Label the remaining ink with the same information. Keeping a cured sample with the formula provides a visual standard for repeat orders.
Mistake 15: Matching Under Poor Lighting
Colors can look different under daylight, fluorescent lighting, LEDs, and retail lighting. Two samples may appear to match under one light source and separate under another. This is known as metamerism.
Evaluate important matches under consistent neutral lighting and, when practical, under the conditions where the finished garment will be viewed. Do not approve critical colors beside brightly colored walls or under strongly tinted lights.
Mistake 16: Skipping Production Testing
A small hand-printed sample may not exactly match ink printed on an automatic press. Changes in pressure, speed, screen tension, deposit, and flash conditions can alter the final appearance.
Before starting a large order, run a short production test and confirm:
- Color accuracy
- Opacity
- Screen clearance
- Flash behavior
- Bleed resistance
- Full cure
- Wash durability
Approve the color after the test has cooled completely. Polyester samples should also be inspected later because dye migration may continue developing after curing.
