How long screen printing ink lasts depends mainly on the ink chemistry and how it is stored. Properly stored plastisol can remain usable for an extremely long time, while water-based, discharge, catalyzed, and other reactive systems usually have more limited storage or working lives.

Does Plastisol Ink Expire?
Plastisol does not dry through evaporation. It remains uncured until heat causes the resin and plasticizer to fuse together. Because of this, properly stored plastisol does not have the short shelf life associated with many other ink systems.
An opened container can remain usable just as long as an unopened container if the lid is secured and the ink is protected from contamination. Opening the bucket does not begin a chemical countdown.
The greatest threat to stored plastisol is heat. Do not store it:
- On a heater or heating pad
- Beside a flash or conveyor dryer
- In direct sunlight
- Inside a hot vehicle or trailer
- Near machinery that becomes hot during operation
Heat can partially cure or gel the ink inside the container. Once plastisol has been heat-cured, mixing or reducer cannot return it to its original condition.
How Long Does Water-Based Ink Last?
Water-based ink generally has a more limited shelf life than plastisol. Water can evaporate from a poorly sealed container, and the binders, pigments, and additives may change during long storage.
Keep water-based ink tightly closed and follow the date and storage instructions supplied by its manufacturer. Some products may also be damaged by freezing or extreme heat.
Do not assume that adding water will restore an old water-based ink. Excess water can weaken the color, change the viscosity, and interfere with curing or wash durability.
Activated Discharge And Two-Part Inks
Discharge, catalyzed, and two-part systems may have a reasonable shelf life before they are mixed, but their usable time changes after the activator or catalyst is added.
Once activated, these products usually have a defined pot life. After that period, the mixture may no longer discharge, bond, cure, or wash properly even if it still looks printable.
Mix only the quantity required for the job and follow the instructions for the exact system. Do not return activated material to the original unmodified container.
Additives Can Change Shelf Life
Unmodified plastisol may store indefinitely, but that expectation may no longer apply after certain additives are introduced.
Catalysts, bonding agents, reducers, and specialty modifiers can affect:
- Storage stability

- Curing

Label every modified container with the product added, the amount, and the date. Follow the storage or pot-life instructions for the additive rather than assuming the mixture will behave like the original ink.
Does Specialty Plastisol Last As Long?
Glitter, metallic, glow, puff, and other plastisol specialty inks can also have a very long storage life when protected from heat and contamination.
However, heavier pigments and effect particles may settle during storage. Settling does not necessarily mean the ink has expired. Bring the container to room temperature and mix it thoroughly from the bottom upward.
Do not grind or crush specialty particles while mixing. Glitter and metallic effects depend on the size and shape of those particles.

Old plastisol often appears thicker because it is cold or has been sitting without being mixed. Plastisol is shear-thinning, which means it becomes easier to move as it is stirred and worked beneath the squeegee.
Before adding reducer:

- Scrape material from the bottom and sides.
- Test the ink through the recommended mesh.

How To Tell If Old Plastisol Is Still Good

Ink is often still usable when it:
- Returns to a smooth, uniform consistency
- Contains no hard or rubbery pieces
- Has not been contaminated
- Prints through the recommended mesh
- Cures and survives washing

- Hard particles that will not mix back into the ink

Always Print And Cure A Test
A visual inspection cannot confirm that stored ink still performs correctly. Print a sample using the intended screen, garment, and curing process.
After the sample cools, check:
- Color
- Opacity
- Screen release
- Stretch
- Adhesion
- Surface quality
- Wash durability
Polyester prints should also be inspected after resting because dye migration may appear later. If the ink prints, cures, and washes correctly, its age is generally not a problem.
Prevent Contamination During Storage
Contamination can ruin plastisol long before age does. Keep the lid closed whenever the ink is not being used and clean the rim before sealing the container.
Use clean, dry spatulas and mixing tools. Do not introduce:
- Water
- Screen wash
- Press cleaner
- Mineral spirits
- Lint or garment fibers
- Another ink color
Ink removed from a screen should only be returned to the original container when it is clean and uncontaminated. Keep questionable reclaimed ink in a separate labeled container.
Store Ink At A Stable Room Temperature
A climate-controlled production or storage room is ideal. The exact temperature does not need to remain perfectly constant, but it should stay within a normal room-temperature range.
Garages, trailers, and warehouses can expose ink to extreme summer heat or winter cold. Cold plastisol can usually recover after warming and mixing. Heat exposure is more dangerous because it can begin curing the ink permanently.
Store containers upright on sturdy shelving. Keep five-gallon buckets on lower shelves when practical so they are safer to handle.
Label And Rotate Your Inventory
Although plastisol does not need to be discarded simply because it is old, good inventory records remain useful.
Labels should identify:
- Ink series and color
- Lot number when available
- Date received or mixed
- Custom formula or job number
- Any additives used
- Recommended cure temperature
Use older containers first when they are in good condition. This keeps inventory organized and helps prevent forgotten colors from accumulating.

If concentrated pigments are used, they must be combined with the correct base before printing. Pigment concentrates are not printable ink by themselves. Follow the storage instructions for both the base and pigment system.
A custom mixture containing a catalyst or time-sensitive modifier should be treated according to that additive's instructions.
