What Causes Screens To Clog?

Water-Based Inks Dry Quickly

Water-based inks begin drying as soon as they are exposed to air. During long pauses, the moisture evaporates and leaves dried ink in the mesh openings.

This is one reason many beginners start with plastisol inks. Plastisol does not air dry and remains workable in the screen for much longer.

Ink May Be Too Thick

Heavy-bodied inks and white inks naturally have higher viscosity. If the ink is too thick, it may not shear properly and can begin filling the mesh openings.

High-opacity whites such as #26 HV White and 2001 Dream White are designed for strong coverage, but proper mesh selection and printing technique are still important.

If needed, additives such as Visco Minus or Auto Formula Additive can help improve flow characteristics.

Mesh Count Matters

Using a mesh count that is too high for the ink deposit can create printing problems.

For example, trying to force heavy white ink through very fine mesh may lead to poor ink transfer and mesh clogging.

Lower mesh counts generally work better for white inks and thicker deposits, while higher mesh counts are ideal for fine detail and thinner inks.
