Because plastisol does not air dry, it can remain in an open screen for a reasonable amount of time without clogging the image. A printer can pause production, adjust registration, or leave ink in the screen during a short interruption without immediately losing the stencil openings.

Which Ink Produces the Softest Print?

Production Speed and Press Downtime

Plastisol is generally easier to manage during stop-and-start production. If the press stops briefly, the ink can remain in the screen without drying.

Water-based ink performs best when production keeps moving. Long pauses allow water to evaporate from the image area, which can cause dried ink to block fine details. Reopening those areas can slow production and may damage the stencil.

Experienced water-based printers can still operate very efficiently because they build their workflow around the characteristics of the ink. Screens remain flooded, ink levels are maintained, and cleanup begins promptly when production ends.

For shops that frequently change garments, pause between prints, or handle many short production runs, plastisol may be easier to manage.

Cleanup Differences

Uncured plastisol does not rinse away with water. It normally requires a screen wash or ink-removal product before the screen can be reclaimed.

Water-based ink can often be cleaned with water while it remains wet, but that does not automatically mean the resulting wastewater can be poured down a drain. Pigments, binders, additives, cleaning residues, and local wastewater regulations still need to be considered.

Dried water-based ink can also become difficult to remove. Screens should be cleaned promptly before remaining ink hardens inside the mesh.

Whichever ink system is used, shops should establish a cleanup process that captures ink solids and follows product safety information and local disposal requirements.

Shelf Life and Ink Waste

Water-based ink generally requires more attention to container sealing and shelf life. Water can evaporate from an improperly closed container, and some formulas or activated systems may have a limited usable period after opening or mixing.

Plastisol can also help reduce waste during short runs because clean ink can often be removed from the screen and returned to its container. Water-based ink that has begun drying or has been modified during production may not be as easy to recover and reuse.

Which Ink Is More Environmentally Friendly?

Water-based ink is often described as the more environmentally friendly choice, but the comparison is more complicated than simply looking at the carrier used in the formula.

Using both systems requires organization. Screens, emulsions, cleanup products, dryer settings, and production procedures must all be appropriate for the ink being used. Containers and mixing tools should also be clearly labeled to prevent accidental contamination.

There is no rule requiring a shop to permanently commit to one ink type. The better approach is to select the ink system that gives you the best result for each project.
