Do not place a cold bucket on a heater, heating pad, flash dryer, or other direct heat source to speed up the process. Localized heat can begin curing the ink along the bottom or sides of the container while the center remains cold.

Instead, move the closed container into a room-temperature area and allow the entire bucket to warm naturally. Once the ink reaches room temperature, stir it completely before deciding whether its viscosity needs adjustment.

Keep The Container Closed

Plastisol does not need air to cure, so an open container will not dry in the same way as water-based ink. However, the lid still serves several important purposes.

Stir from the bottom of the container and work around the sides until the ink has a smooth, uniform consistency. Keep Ink Away From Water And Cleaning Chemicals

Store ink separately from cleaning chemicals whenever possible. When color changes or cleanup are taking place near an open bucket, replace the lid as soon as the ink is no longer being used.

What About Garages And Warehouses?

A garage or warehouse can be suitable if the temperature remains reasonably controlled. The problem is not the name of the room; it is the environmental extremes inside it.

An unheated garage may make ink extremely stiff during winter. The same garage may become dangerously hot during summer. Temperature swings can also cause condensation around containers and create inconsistent conditions from one day to the next.

If your primary storage area is not climate controlled, move the ink into the production room well before it is needed. Allow the entire container to reach room temperature naturally before mixing and printing.

Specialty Inks May Need Extra Mixing

Metallic, glitter, reflective, glow-in-the-dark, and other specialty inks contain particles that may settle during storage. Settling does not necessarily mean the product is unusable, but these inks require especially thorough mixing before printing.

Fold the settled material back into the base without grinding, crushing, or damaging the effect particles. Always follow the technical recommendations for the specific specialty ink because mesh count, mixing method, and print deposit can differ from standard plastisol colors.

Modified And Two-Part Inks Are Different

The indefinite-storage expectation applies to unmodified plastisol that has been stored correctly. An ink may behave differently after another material has been added.

Catalysts, bonding agents, specialty additives, reducers, and mixed ink systems may have their own usable time limits. Once a product has been catalyzed or combined with a time-sensitive additive, follow the instructions for that mixture rather than assuming it can remain on the shelf indefinitely.

Water-based, discharge, silicone, and other non-plastisol systems also have different storage requirements. Always consult the label or technical data for the specific ink being stored.

Age alone is not a reason to discard plastisol. First bring the ink to room temperature and mix it thoroughly. Then inspect and test it.
